Yes, Mansa Musa was most likely the richest man ever, however I do not think he has a known net worth as said by other sources. To put a price tag on the quantity of wealth Mansa Musa had, would seemingly be almost impossible. He was rich according to the many sources we have, that are in fact dependable. In source B, it states, “‘"The men-at-arms come with wonderful weaponry: quivers of silver and gold, swords covered with gold... Four of the amirs stand behind him to drive off flies, with ornaments of silver in their hands... .... The Interpreter brings in his four wives and his concubines, who are about a hundred in number. On them are fine clothes and on their heads they have bands of silver and gold with silver and gold apples as pendants. …show more content…
It is a country rich in livestock – cattle, sheep, goats, horses, mules, and different kinds of poultry – geese, doves, chickens….He has a truce with the gold-plant people, who pay him tribute. . . .” This explains how Mansa conquered many places and he gained great wealth because of it. It also talks about how Mansa’s city was rich in ot only gold, but also livestock. In the video in source D it also explains how Mansa’s country was rich in salt and wealth, which were both extremely valuable during this time period. It also tells about how Mansa gave away large sums of money to people as a sort of charity. Generally if you’re going to give away money to help the poor in a country, you are most likely going to be at least some what rich. Now we know based on these accounts that Mansa Musa most likely has a lot of money, but the question is how much? Source F seems to have the answer, “Mansa Musa, the king of Timbuktu, is often referred to as the wealthiest person in history. According to Ferrum College history professor Richard Smith, Musa’s west African kingdom was likely the largest producer of gold in the world—at a time which gold was in especially high
