The author, Lauren F. Serrano, believes women should not serve in the U.S Infantry. Serrano’s article, “Why Women Do Not Belong in the U.S. Infantry”, provides arguments supporting her main points. The main points Serrano includes; why the U.S. is not in need for women on the frontlines, the infantry brotherhood, and sexual assault cases. Serrano served as a Marine Officer and contributes her personal experiences from her service. Although Serrano agrees women are capable to serve in the military, she stresses the infantry is not the main job females should focus on.…
Clemmitt also points out that despite the restrictions some women have secretly participated in ground combat, thus demonstrating that women’s role in the military is becoming more important (Clemmitt). Clemmitt’s piece gives excellent and real examples of actual women in military and their experiences and achievements that prove McGregor’s claims of women being skilled soldiers when it comes to combat. Female soldiers like Morgan and Dunwoody are not the only ones who have made remarkable achievements as women in the military, however they are among the few who have been recognized for their actions which supports that more women are capable of doing what Morgan and Dunwoody had…
September 11, 2001, will always be remembered as one of the most horrible days in the United States. The events of this day affected lots pf Americans. Thousands of lives were ended because of this tragedy. After 9/11, the world changed socially, economically, & culturally, making the United States very rich. Women in the society had to change their roles.…
In the military, women were originally not allowed to have combat positions, but now they are allowed to be in every one of them. Ashton Carter said, “To succeed in our mission of national defence, we cannot…
Remember when segregation was an issue? Remember when sexism were an issue? I do, and that issue is still going on today. “Why Marines, Unlike Army and Navy, Are So Against Women in Combat” by Anna Malrine speaks of the injustice and sexist attitudes portrayed by the Marin Corps in recent discussions. Malrine is honest when she speaks of the wrongful attitudes toward women in this article, women in combat could help our marines not hurt them, women can help have a different mindset, open up areas that men can not fit in, and work with the women of the world.…
McGregor also adds that beyond helping with that issue having women in different parts of the military will being diversity into the military. I agree with this statement because in today’s world we like to follow the saying, “Out with the old and in with the new.” As you can see the author, Jenna McGregor, has good facts to go along her topic but not always good explanation. After reading and analyzing her writing I can see that there are problems with the way women are being treated in the military, but with people taking control this is slowly coming to an end. After reading this essay I think we can all agree to this statement by Greg Jacob, “women in the military are being held back simply because they are…
In the beginning of the 20th century, women in Europe were still expected to take care of the household and children. Almost all nationally important decisions were made by males and female influence on politics was negligible. When the First World War erupted, all countries had to transform the male labor force into armed forces, but the nation’s economy had to continue with production and that was an opportunity for females to prove their position in the society. (Doc2.) During the war, females became more involved in the social struggle and had more influence.…
The dictionary definition of objectification is to refer to a person as an object, an appellation which usually pertains to the mistreatment of women. The objectification of women is usually most evident in all types of media, including short stories, for instance, Tim O’Brien’s The Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong. This short story, in particular, places some verification that men had seen women as toys for the men’s “entertainment and education” (68). As soon as Mary Anne Belle “came in by helicopter” (67) into the camp, there was a widespread of “some envy” (68) among the men who “genuinely liked her” (68). “The guys appreciated … the kind of come-get-me energy, coy and flirtatious” (68) ambience that Mary Anne Belle gave off.…
In the article living and Fitting Alongside Men, and Fitting In was by Steven Lee Myers, he mention about the negative and positive outcome of women that are joined in the military. The article gives information on the current status of women that are in the military. Also, the article describes how women that are in the military have their own living quarter for housing units. That article talks about sex and how it might end America military prowess. However, it talks about how now there are birth control and even ultrasound machines for safety.…
August 18, 1920: the day that the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified. After more than 70 years of struggle during the women’s suffrage movement, the day finally came; their goal was finally achieved. Many factors contributed to the ratification of this amendment that gave women the right to vote. Some of those factors include the Seneca Falls Convention, which started the entire movement, and the strenuous efforts of suffrage groups, such as the National Women Suffrage Association and the American Women Suffrage Association (History.com staff, "The Fight for Women’s Suffrage"). Around the time of the peak of the women’s suffrage movement, World War I began.…
It wasn't necessarily people with gender bias opinions that prevented Col. Birchfield from doing a “man’s job” it was policies and cultural concerns. The world wasn't ready to see women in combat, in society they are seen as fragile and weaker compared to male soldiers. Most people can't imagine a female running into the combat zone, with a weapon in her hand dodging bullets and IEDs all around her, but doesn't mean it's impossible for them to do it. Colonel Birchfield, from “butter bar” to Full Bird Colonel has shown with her 23 years in service that standards that are set and shouldn't be changed for women. We are all soldiers, some weaker and some stronger, but in the end we all are…
Today women 's duties in American society have significantly evolved as compared to earlier counterparts living during the era of the Revolutionary War. During the 1700s to early 1800s, single women could own property, execute a contract, prosecute or be prosecuted. However, married women recognized as femme couverte had to give up not only her name but all properties she owned. Married women were not allowed to purchase, sell or convey property to another person.…
“The Barbie Birthday” focusses most lines onto the appearance of the doll and how the author felt, pushing the plot to the side. “Let Women Fight” is once again different, as it is an advocacy piece. Megan H. Mackenzie lets the audience know that she disagrees with the current regulations on women in the military. She then spends the next pages arguing for why women should be allowed, even invalidating counterarguments. In one example about physical fitness of women, she says, “The argument continues to receive a significant amount of attention in the United States, despite the fact that other militaries across the world have found that with proper training and necessary adaptations, women can complete the same physical tasks as men” (Mackenzie, 2012, p.343).…
This article expresses the supporting and opposing views of women in Combat. Supporters say that women are fully capable of being in combat, while the opposition is women in combat is less effective to the military because they are not as physically capable. This is overall a good source to use in the introduction because it gives both view points and basic information to set the argument. “Women in the Military Follow-Up: Pentagon Lifts Restrictions on Women in Combat.” Issues& Controversies.…
Equal opportunity may not result in equal outcome In light of Secretary of Defense Aston Carter’s recent announcement that all combat military occupational specialties will open to women, I feel compelled to speak on this controversial subject. In this paper I will talk about both sides of the argument including factors of the effects of gender integration in combat units and provide reasons that justify predictions that people have made. This certain topic affects me because I have a brother that has given four years of service and has five more years of service to give after becoming an officer for the Marines. My brother Thomas served as infantry member and if they rule that women may serve it will affect him in his military career in the…
