The painful protocols animals are subjected to during research and testing can be anywhere from burning skin, blinding, planting electrodes into the brain, infecting with diseases, long term social isolation, and the list go's on and on. Vivisection is one of the worst kinds of animal abuse in our society and it is a sanctioned and legal abuse. The harm caused by animal experimentation is not only cruel but also ineffective. Animals don’t get the same diseases as humans. Instead laboratories induce signs of major types of diseases into the animals to mimic a human disease. After years of studying diseases such as cancer, diabetes, stroke, and AIDS in animals, we still don’t have reliable and effective cures. Due to the unreliable aspects of animal experimentation putting animals through these traumatic experiments is unethical and wrong. The question needs to be asked if animal testing is indeed essential and what are the equally effective options and benefits. Dr. Elias Zerhouni, former director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health admitted that experimenting on animals to benefit humans has been a big failure.” We have moved away from studying human disease in …show more content…
The problem is that animal testing hasn’t worked and it’s time we stop dancing around the problem. We need to refocus and adapt new methods for use in humans to understand disease biology in humans.” Animal experimentation is not essential because in many cases the results do not apply to humans. Modern scientist are trying to create new methods for studying diseases and testing products that replace animals and are more relevant to human health. Some of these modern methods use human cells and tissues, known as in vitro, advanced computer modeling referred to as in silico, non-invasive imaging such as MRI’s, CT scans, and micro dosing in human volunteers These method and others cost less money, take less time to complete, and they aren’t hindered by species differences. In addition to the benefits of less time and money there are other clear benefits of non-animal testing. Alternative scientific tests are more reliable and accurate. Also to be considered that scientists and researchers retest in dispose of animals as hazardous waste. Cruelty free testing is better for the environment and creates less waste. Researchers have many effective testing options available that have clear benefits for animals, humans, and the environment. Proving that animal testing is not
