Animal activists have called for an all out ban on animal testing. Animal testing is immoral and unethical and the tests conducted by government agencies, educational institutions, and scientific centers is unnecessary. Activists have argued that these tests are painful and distressful to the animals and using them is wrong and selfish. We need to look objectively to see whether animal experimentation is essential or whether there are some equally effective options. We need to show people their obligation to protect animals from excessive and unnecessary cruelty. The painful protocols animals are subjected to during research and testing can be anywhere from burning skin, blinding, planting electrodes into the brain, infecting with diseases, long term social isolation, and the list go's on and on. Vivisection is one of the worst kinds of animal abuse in our society and it is a sanctioned and legal abuse. The harm caused by animal experimentation is not only cruel but also ineffective. Animals don’t get the same diseases as humans. Instead laboratories induce signs of major types of diseases into the animals to mimic a human disease. After years of studying diseases such as cancer, diabetes, stroke, and AIDS in animals, we still don’t have reliable and effective cures. Due to the unreliable aspects of animal experimentation putting animals through these traumatic experiments is unethical and wrong. The question needs to be asked if animal testing is indeed essential and what are the equally effective options and benefits.
