Bama Pigs

Decent Essays
In David Cyranoski’s article from 29th September, 2015 on Nature.com website , he mentioned that a famous genomics institute in Shenzhen is going to sell gene-edited miropigs as pets, and each costs $10,000 yuan (US$1,600). The customers can choose unequal coat colours and patterns of pigs through their gene arrangement subsequently. Those pigs not only can be our pets, but also were fabricated as models for human disease by using a gene-editing tool --- TALENs. Geneticists make use of TALENs to disable genes inside the pigs. Therefore, Bama pigs only weight about 15 kilograms when they have grown up.

To me, the genomics institute should stop to produced miropigs and sell them as pets because it violates the animal rights and the principles

To avoid health problems, the small pigs were bred with normal pigs. As a result, only half the pigs born naturally are small, but none have exhibited health problems commonly associated with gene editing. The pigs were originally meant to be used as models for human disease. This is because pigs are genetically much closer to humans both physiologically and genetically. The scientists’ original mission was to create a cheaper pig that could be used in the place of lab rats.…

Animal Research is, has always been, and will most likely continue to be a delicate subject. The use of animals in research ranges from cosmetics to medical and wherever there are animals being tests there are groups of people arguing the morality and ethics of the testing being done. Excluding cosmetics and the like for now (that’s a different argument), the use of animal research in neuroscience is absolutely necessary and though it is a sensitive issue, there are ways to make it more ethically acceptable and to protect the animals themselves from blatant cruelty. Today, animal research is more humane than it has ever been.…

Animals all over the globe are sitting in a cage right now, scared, cold and alone waiting for the next experiment to be done to them. They sit in this cage longing for the day that they are able to free, if they survive the experiments or if they are of no longer need to the scientists. Every year there are millions of animals killed in laboratories from the tests and experiments done to them. These poor, defenseless animals are poisoned, shocked, and burned during these tests and are often killed because of this. If these actions were done outside of a laboratory it would be considered animal abuse.…

Some others have taken even further steps in the wrong direction, choosing to believe that each type of animal testing is terrible and trying to condemn medical research as well, endangering countless lives in doing so. Cosmetic testing needs to be stopped, to save not only the animals who suffer through it, but to save the souls of people as well. Animals can save humans as much as we can save them in a way, but to avoid continuing to be the cruelest species, the cruelty inflicted on animals for vanity must be stopped, for the sake of…

The amount of money we waste on animal testing is un believable. The US National institutes of Health spends about 14 billion of its 31 billion annual budget on animal research. The amount of waste , cruelty, and ineffectiveness is unreal. I. Humane Society International compared the cost of a few random animal testing methods and their cruelty free alternative. An "unscheduled DNA synthesis" animal test costs $32,000, while the alternative method would cost about $11,000.…

Animal testing has been a part of our society since the early 1900s. And it appears to me, that not until around 40 years ago or so, people began to realize that testing animals was inhumane on many different levels. But because we are the human beings that we are, we still try to shy away from a lot of the negative consequences of animal testing. It is easier for us to push aside that which is bad and try only to look at the positive aspects. Yet, in my opinion, the cons outweigh the pros.…
