On November 7, 2015 at 1300, I was able to visit the Ruggieri Senior Center in Union City. Around the time I visited, the seniors are having their weekly ballroom extravaganza in which couples and willing participants ages 60 and up are dressed in their ballroom outfits. They have their friends, husband, and wives dancing to different types of ballroom dances such as cha-cha, waltz, foxtrot, merengue, Chinese jitter, and samba. The women were wearing colorful and glittery-dancing outfits while the men were wearing their dress pants and dancing shoes. It seemed like everyone was having fun and socializing.
Upon observation, those who were at the Ballroom dancing event were very happy and enthusiastic to be there. I interviewed three gentlemen and their partners; they have nothing but good things to say about the center in general and the programs Ruggieri has to offer. Scott who is a 65 year old male states that he enjoyed going to the different dances that the program offers. He states that he like to come to the events to exercise and socialize with his “buddies” as well as meet new people. He comes “wherever the music is playing”. In addition, Myra who is a 63-year-old female, states that she comes to the center almost everyday. She gushes that she would rather be there than be at home doing nothing. She enjoys the taichi classes, and computer classes offered at center. She believes that the senior center holds an excellent educational and fitness programs for the senior population. …show more content…
Upon my 4 hours stay in the area, I have observed that it lies near the residential and industrial side of Union City. It is located in 33997 Alvarado Niles road. It is just across James Logan High School and a few blocks away from El Mercado Shopping Center. The senior center is a large assembly hall that can occupy at least 200 people. It is well made with wooden ceiling and hardwood floors. The outside contains many large grown trees that offers a lot of shades and flower bushes in which adds an appealing flare to the area. The center also has a large kitchen and a separate dining hall that can accommodate at least 100
