Ballet is usually only associated with pink tutus and pointe shoes, but that is most definitely not the case. “Ballet has physical and cognitive benefits that may exceed those of other forms of exercise” (Komaroff). Ballet helps with all kinds of topics, including large and small muscles, stability, coordination, attention, and emotional connectivity. However, it has been proven to help athletes such as tennis players (Bishop), due to the fact that many of the muscles used in ballet are also used in running, aerobics and weight-lifting. In addition, athletes such as Herschel Walker and Lynn Swann, both football players, have studied ballet to help them improve their performance during games (O'Conner). Also, research has shown that ballet benefits the physically and mentally challenged due to the fact that it can improve gait, balance, quality of life, social skills, and many others (Komaroff). Ballet is not just for prima ballerinas; ballet also provides benefits for non dancers. Ballet teaches agility because it involves many fast turns, leaps, and jumps that have to be done with precision while looking graceful. In addition, it teaches balance because dancers have to stand on their toes while supporting their body weight. Ballet also teaches endurance because most of the exercises involve using certain muscles for a long period of time without taking a break.
