Ballet dancer 's bodily practices in training involves agency with inner experience of power, control and strength as highlighted by anthropologist of the body, Anna Aalten (2004). For dance scholar Angela Pickard (2015): “The unnatural in the form of ballet technique is made natural or in Bourdieu 's terms, the ballet technique required for the movement sequence has been acquired as part of the unconscious ballet dancer 's habitus through repetition and practice. Additionally, the psychological experience of the body is that 'it is beautiful ' implying that the memory of the experience is positive.” (p.129)
Thinking about agency in bodily training Potter (2007) argues that “dance training involves a high degree of bodily repetition, subjective intention, and choice” (p.40), where new sensory experiences make possible to reshape the habitus at the social level. At daily technique training the dancer attempts to produce an idealized body posture experiencing a dualistic understanding of the body where it it is never experienced entirely as either body-object or body-subject, but it is a subject-object continuum. The dancing body is site of a political struggle between multiple influences from teachers, choreographers, public audience, company directors and dance peers, engaging in relations of resistance and agency by survaillance of self-monitoring while been monitored by others, corroborating Focault’s (1979) ideas on institutionalized social control.
