A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of visiting the exhibit Diaghilev and the Ballet Russes, 1909-1929: When Art Danced with Music at the National Gallery of Art. But this was not my first experience with this exhibit, no for I had the opportunity to perform in honor of this exhibit this past summer where I performed right outside the entrance the to the showcase. I performed the roles of the Faun in Vaslav Nijinsky’s Afternoon of a Faun, and Prince Ivan in The Firebird.…
“To say that what they do is not athletic is unfair. On top of all the physicality involved a dancer must make the steps look easy & perform them with a smile on their face. Dance is a beautiful sport & the dancers are beautiful, inspiring athletes!”(Livingston). This quote shows that calling dance a sport is actually correct, and this primary source was able to show that with their past experience that there are many facts that prove that the definition of dance really does line up with the definition of…
Dance has long been a medium that represents American culture that is constantly evolving and Martha Graham and Frank Gatson Jr. are two of many choreographers that helped developing modern dancing in America. After watching a lot of videos on how different type of dances emerged in America, I found Martha Graham’s work appealed to me the most because of her expressiveness and intensity in movements. Brought up by a father who was a psychiatrist, her first lesson of dancing was, “Movement never lie. You will always reveal what you feel in your heart by what you do on your movements”.…
She is constantly criticizing herself, and how her figure is not perfect even though she strives to be. Dancing is the point her life revolves around, and she was taught to be perfect even when perfection is unattainable. It is her own form of gravity. Ballet is used not just for dance, but to help athletes become more successful and obtain better stamina, self-control, agility, and flexibility. If you’re an athlete, and a first time dancer, you don’t want to do the extremities that regular ballet dancers do.…
Should Dance Be a Flex Credit at Jackson High School? Dance is well known to millions across the world as moving in a different your body in a different way than your body would normally. Yes, dance is moving your body in a unique way, but dance also takes strength, stamina, and flexibility.…
Ballet is a form of self discipline. You have to make sure every part of your body is how it should be while doing a leap, or turn. Also I like lyrical because its like ballet but without the pointe shoes and the up tempo music. Dance enables you to find yourself and lose yourself at the same time! It's a passion.…
A dancer hears it all the time, “Dance is not a sport.” As a dancer for fifteen years, I have heard this saying numerous times. The dictionary defines a sport as, “An athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature.” (“Sport”). Dance is a physically exerting activity and is sometimes competed against other teams or individuals to.…
Everyone has their own opinion in dancing but dancing is a sport because dancers have the same requirements that sports do. There are many categories in dance and each one has their own level of difficulty. Dance is very healthy for you and everyone should have the chance and try to join something that has to do with dancing because it’s fun, entertaining, and healthy because it involves physical activity. It is the best feeling in the world and it can make someone really happy and dance suits a very competitive person. Dance is for everyone, no matter what age, size, condition.…
In sports, athletes do not use this performance aspect. Therefore, in this aspect, some may say dance is more of a performing art than a sport. However, I agree with the words of Jenna Garecht, “Just because dance is a sport does not mean that it isn’t also an art” (“Is Dance A Sport Or An…
What do you think of when you hear the word ballerina? I know that I think of young women and girls that dance on their tippy toes. There special shoes that allow them to be able to do this are called a pointe shoe, and can be made for just one specific dancer. It’s not all graceful and effortless movements. If you are not trained for these shoes you can really get hurt.…
In ballet, your legs and your arms could be moving at the same time, and it is like patting your head and rubbing your stomach at the same time. Ballet also exercises your brain to think and move two parts of your body at once. Because of dance, I feel I have gotten better at multi-tasking. For example, I never used to be able to listen and write/read at the same time whether I am listening to music or listen to my teacher while doing my homework or writing down note. I can focus on both of the sounds and what is on my paper in front of me.…
Dancers are told that there is always someone better then them and that they must keep trying until they are perfect in all aspects of dance. This mindset causes many dancers to strive for perfection making them try and have the perfect ballet body as the first step. Being a dancer myself and seeing many struggle with this has made this topic very personal to me. Also…
The dance concert I chose to see for my critique was The Nutcracker. Ballet Arizona was the company that put on this show. I saw this production on Tuesday, December 10, 2015 at Symphony Hall in Phoenix, Arizona. Since The Nutcracker is a holiday classic, I have always wanted to see how a young girl's toy nutcracker came to life. I have read before about it but have never seen it for myself.…
In general, rhythmic gymnasts focuses more on flexibility and coordination. Gymnasts participating in this sport are tall and skinny to show the beauty of flexibility and exaggerate the lining of their body. Artistic and rhythmic gymnastics both dedicate the majority of their time in the gym and involves training to perfection. Woman Artistic gymnastics is a creative blend of daring and control; powerful yet elegant, while rhythmic gymnastics involves the beauty of flexibility that consist of coordination and perfect timing. Each sport share many common similarities, but also have differences that…
