Balanced Year-Round School Schedule

William Butler Yeats once said, “Education is not the filling of the pail, but the lighting of a fire.” This quote is relevant to school and the education system because a balanced year-round schedule will ignite the fire for students to learn. The traditional school schedule should be replaced with a year-round schedule that has periodical breaks. With a balanced schedule, students will have better retention of material without having a long summer vacation. Students will also not fall behind and fail classes. By having occasional days off, students and teachers alike will not get burned out and lose motivation. Summer vacation hurts learning retention. Students can lose between one to three months of learning over the summer, squandering knowledge largely in reading and math computation (More). This argument is irrelevant because students can still get jobs over the abbreviated summer. Typically year-round schools will still have a month to six week summer vacation that students could take advantage of for beneficial income and involvement (Hunter). They also could schedule work over the periodical breaks and could possibly have more job opportunities for seasonal work in the winter, spring, and fall seasons depending on location.
A year-round school schedule has many advantages that outweigh the few positives of the traditional school schedule. Primarily, students will not forget information lost over the long summer months. They also will not fall behind resulting in less failures. Teachers and students will be energized and inspired to do their jobs and responsibilities.
