Albert Einstein, arguably one of the smartest men to ever live, stated and lived his life by this quote. The college years are quite possibly one of the hardest times to navigate and maintain a healthy lifestyle. The “freshman” fifteen is a well-known and documented phenomena. Unless the student mastered the art of time management during the high school years, balance is often lost and health diminishes during the years of university life. Physical fitness has been proven to boost academic achievement. A study reported on NBC Nightly News in August 2016 provided the results of an achievement trial involving Asian and American children. The Asian children were required to exercise each day to a target heart rate before school began. The American children were not required to exercise before school. In a nutshell, exams scores were consistently higher in the Asian students with all other variables controlled. One hypothesis was that increased blood flow and oxygen to the brain can carry over into clarity in thought. This observation could be carried forward to college life (Zelman 133-36). Physical activity performed before a rigorous day of classes might actually improve comprehension and test scores. Extracurricular activities also provide for healthy relationships and networking opportunities. They can help break up the routine of what could be a rigorous and monotonous college schedule. And with 85% of students admitting to overworking themselves, I 'm definitely speaking of the vast majority (“19 Great Work Life Balance Statistics”). With the right amount of know-how and determination, excellence in academics and true contentment in personal life can be achieved simultaneously. Physical activity, mental challenge, and a healthy diet all play a key role in a successful college career and life. The successful businesswoman and TV personality Ellen DeGeneres once stated, “...life is about balance. The good and the bad. The highs and the lows. The pina and the colada”. I believe that with the right balance of work and pleasure, a healthy diet to enhance life, and the right extracurricular activities that physically and mentally challenge a student, he or she can truly have it all.
