Prompt 3. Balance the dualistic nature of the Troy Maxon character.
In the book “Fences” Troy presented two characteristics based on how he was feeling at the moment. During the book Troy showed he was a responsible man who placed his priorities first but he also proved he was a very insincere man. Once he did what he was supposed to as a man he doubted his child and betrayed his wife. Troy and Rose have been married for 18 years and according to the narrator “She recognizes Troy’s spirit as a fine and illuminating one and she either ignores or forgives his faults, only some of which she recognizes”. “I gave eighteen years of my life to stand in the same spot with you”. Rose sacrificed her love for Troy and took the newborn over him which is somewhat understandable, the child was not hers but it also filled her void she stated “ Here is a man that can fill all empty spaces you been tipping around the edges of. One of them empty spaces was being somebody’s mother” It seems Rose wanted another child other than Cory, which explains why she treated Lyons, her stepson as her own giving him money when he needed it pg 14 but without months of sexual encounters with Troy and their financial stability it was never the topic of discussion to breed another child. Rose said “By the time Raynell came into the house, me and your daddy had done lost touch with one another. I didn't want to make my blessing off of nobody’s misfortune...but I took on to Raynell like she was all them babies I had wanted and never had” It was conspicuous that Troy was talented at stomping on others plans and …show more content…
Defend or refute. Lyons was not a selfish character even though some of his actions portrayed that he was struggling financially on pg 14. When Lyons asked for money “let me have 10 dollars” Troy showed this was a routine “You was in the neighborhood alright, nigger...You was in the neighborhood cause it’s, my payday”. $10 dollars whenever Lyons need it does not add up for the 15 years Troy haven't been in his life. A boy needs their father growing up Cory had Troy and Lyons didn't, if Troy had brung Lyons into that house and controlled his life like he did with Cory, Lyons would have been better off he didn't have both parents. It may have seem selfish when Lyons didn't attend his only brother graduation on pg 81 “I’m sorry I missed your graduation...I had a gig” but he had to work to make end meet for his family, the saddest part is that Lyons did a desperate act that backfired taking him from his family completely on pg 94 Lyons said “ they got me down the workhouse. I thought I was being slick chasing other people's checks...they give me three years” Desperate times calls for desperate measures. Lyons didn't know any better and his acts were not selfish just a cry for

Chris McCandless’ actions can be seen as rebellious at first, but as time goes on, it is clear that there is hostility between his parents and himself that he does not want to face or try to fix. In a dysfunctional family, there are two extremes when it comes to the outcome of the children: the rebel or the conformist. Although the older child is typically the conformist and the younger child is the rebel, the McCandless family is a little different because both children are the rebels. Krakauer says, “Also like Chris, she clashed fiercely with Walt and Billie as an adolescent… [but] Carine made peace with her parents shortly after Chris disappeared” (129).…
