The chemical name for baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. Its chemical formula is NaHCO3, meaning it's made of one sodium atom, one hydrogen atom, one carbon atom, and three oxygen atoms. Vinegar is a mixture of acetic acid and water. Dilute acetic acid is the chemical name for vinegar, and its chemical formula is CH3COOH.
Baking soda is a base, and vinegar is an acid. An acid is a chemical that wants to get rid of a proton, or a positively charged hydrogen atom. A base is a chemical that wants a proton. When you mix an acid with a base exciting things can happen because the acid is ready to give away its proton and the base is right there to receive it!

The components of Alka Seltzer come together to form a pain reliever and antacid formulation. Aspirin is classified as a Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug and has the function of a pain-killer, helping to reduce inflammation, fever and pain within the body by reducing the production of a substance called prostaglandins which are “hormone-like substances” (Drugs 2017) that regulate the inflammation and cause the bodies pains and headaches.(Merck Animal Health) The Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate (NaHCO3) and Citric acid on the other hand react together in the aqueous solution to form sodium citrate. The sodium citrate produced is able to neutralise the HCl produced in the stomach by exchanging the H+ in the solution with the Na+ forming citric acid, which is a weaker acid than hydrochloric acid. There is also an excess amount of Sodium Bicarbonate present with solution and the bicarbonate ions act as the main buffering agents neutralising any acid or alkali added producing water.…

The experiment that I am doing is to see if the water temperature affects the reaction time of an Alka-Seltzer explosion. I believe that it will affect the time of how fast the CO2 builds up because the faster it builds up, the quicker the reaction and therefore the explosion comes faster. Alka-Seltzer is a drug that is used for heartburn and indigestion relief, along with many other things. When Alka-Seltzer was first introduced, it was advertised in comics in the newspaper in 1931.…

The concentration of the acetic acid is variable.…

/1 This reaction is a neutralization reaction. A neutralization reaction is a chemical reaction in which an acid and a base react to form an ionic compound (a salt) and water; the resulting pH is closer to 7. The general chemical equation for a neutralization reaction is: Acid + Base Water + Ionic Compound This can also be considered as a double displacement reaction. However, since the reacts are an acid (carbonic acid) and a base (sodium hydroxide) and the products are a salt (sodium carbonate) and water (H2O), it is more specifically a neutralization reaction.…

When we first were signing up to choose our topics, I chose baking because I like to simply bake. I thought that there could be some chemistry involved due to heat in the oven changing food from liquid to solid. I was so wrong. Even though the oven and heat portion plays a major factor, a good portion of the real chemistry lies in the ingredients we use to make such delicious dessert treats and our different breads. From the ten different sources I looked up previously, for the Annotated Bibliography portion, I found that each of the websites say roughly the same thing.…

When explained more in-depth, the double displacement reaction of baking soda(sodium bicarbonate) and vinegar is larger when there is more of the two. When adding more baking soda there is more for it to be mixed with the vinegar. This makes for a greater amount of sodium acetate and carbonic acid. The data teaches that when there is more chemicals added to each other, than there is a larger reaction and more compound made from…
