On January 16, 2014, Officer Juventino Castro of Houston Police Department shot and killed a 26-year-old, unarmed, black male by the name of Jordan Baker who was riding his bike through a strip mall where Officer Castro was working an extra job through the Department’s “Extra Employment System.” Although Castro was not on duty, he was still expected to enforce all federal, state, and city laws at the strip mall with approval from the Houston Police Department. Jordan Baker, however, was not breaking any laws or engaged in any unlawful conduct. In the passage “What Has Happened Here” Elsa Barkley Brown believes that women’s history should be inclusive of gender, race, and culture as these have important significance in shaping outcomes and society perspective. She talks about how historians like to “isolate one conversation” (297) to explore them to tailor its dialogue to fit different narratives. This however in turn loses significant facts that should not be left out when shaping the details. I chose to write about the queer theologians, Jo Hirschmann and Elizabeth Wilson, because I appreciate their emphasis on the importance of intersectionality and moving beyond “identity politics.” As someone who was raised in a Christian household, I find their perspective from the viewpoint of Jewish theologians very interesting, but I think their main ideas can be applied to any religion or faith.
