Green Building Reflection

Improved Essays
When I was deciding what conversation I was going to join, I wanted to pick a topic that I had a great deal of passion for. One of my friends suggested that I should write about something related to my major. Once he said that, a light bulb went off in my head. I am a Building Science major and have worked construction the past two summers for my summer job. I have been to many National Parks across the United States and have fallen in love with the beauty of nature. I put those two things together and decided I was going to join the conversation about Green Building.
All of the research I have completed throughout this semester has been about the effects that buildings have on the environment and the actions that are being taken to lessen

I started by gathering research about global warming in order to get a solid base for my argument. If my audience doesn’t believe in global warming then there would be no point in trying to fix it. In the articles I summarized for Paper I, I used skills learned in class to pick out credible sources. In my first author’s note, I talked about how my first draft of Paper I had information scattered throughout the paper, but, after revising it I was able to make it flow in a logical order. After my first draft, I kept with me that sense of keeping things in a logical order for my audience. This was one of my strengths the remainder of the semester and something I will continue to do in my writing after this course. Looking back on Paper I, my word choice was not as strong as I would have liked it to be, so I made it a goal for me to improve. I started adding more precise adjectives into my papers and cutting them out when they were …show more content…
In the future, I want to improve my diction and use more precise words in my writing to make stronger arguments in my papers. I want my audience to read my papers and learn some new words while still understanding my arguments. I also want to improve on my revising skills of other people’s papers for when my friends ask me to read over their papers. I want to be able to put myself in their shoes and try to understand what they are trying to get across in the most effective way possible.
In the future, I see myself writing a lot in my construction career. From emails to proposals, it is important for me to possess the ability to make my points clear in all of my writing. I also want to be an advocate for green building which would require me writing long articles and speeches for conventions. When I am addressing my own company in meetings, the better a writer I am, the better speaker I will be. Having good writing skills is going to be important to my future success as the owner of my own green construction

For my rhetorical and visual analysis paper, I chose to write about the visual storytelling of an art school’s ad and how it was weak in its presentation. When I decided to write my thoughts on this topic, I wanted to illustrate my professional opinion on advertising and how important it is to touch on all aspects of rhetoric when working on a visual. I also wanted to include this essay rather than my rhetorical narrative paper because I was much more passionate on the topic of analyzing this advertisement. I had much more to talk about within the analysis and found that I also cared about identifying the flaws within the ad more than I did telling a personal story. All the feedback I was given in class was incredibly helpful, as I was able to pick up on what aspects of rhetoric I was lacking in my final draft.…

One of the most important thing I have learned in this course that has positively affected my confidence in my writing skills is the concept of writing a “shitty first draft”. In my midterm self-assessment, I discussed how I thought I was among one of the unlucky ones that was not blessed with natural writing skills. However, through class discussions, I’ve learned that one of the most important competent of professional writing is the need for constant revision. Contrary to popular believe, writing does not come easy to anyone. In order to successfully produce professional writing, it is important that one plan, draft, revise, and edit his or her work.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

This year I have the honor of spending my days with 24 five year just starting their literacy journey. The undertaking is a daunting task (thankfully I have an amazing classroom teacher leading the way), the standards in place for kindergarten students are high. Finding a balance between strategies that distill a text into identifying letters and producing letter sounds, and allowing the students to find delight in a book of their own choice is imperative. I am humbled daily by their fortitude and willingness to participate in the tasks necessary to become lifelong readers and writers. The pendulum swings between excitement and frustration during our ELA lessons, which leads me to reflect on my own literacy experiences, and wonder and hope that I can give them what they need.…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…
