Bajirao: Hero of the Maratha Empire When I was younger my grandpa always told me a story before bedtime. Most of the stories he told me were about Indian history or Indian folktales. Out of all the stories I was told I remember one very well. It was a story about the great Indian warrior, Bajirao Ballal Balaji Bhat, and I wanted to be just like him. Bajirao is considered one of the greatest general to fight for any empire in Indian history. He fought for the Maratha Empire which inhabited most of northern India, and is one of the largest Indian empires in history. He served as the peshwa for the Marathas in the early 19th century under Chhatrapati Shahu. The Marathas were extremely lucky to have Bajirao man their army, as he did many great things. Bajirao should be considered a hero. Bajirao is considered a hero through his help to the Maratha Empire because of his expansion of the empire, military intelligence and success in battle.
As the peshwa [Prime Minister] of Maratha, Bajirao greatly expanded the empire. He became peshwa at the age of twenty in 1720, under Chhatrapati Shahu. Though he may not be a hero to his enemies or the to people of the territories which he conquered, Bajirao was truly a hero for the Marathas. Bajirao was able to become a hero and bring the Marathas glory by winning battles and expanding their territories. He learned to become a great warrior and developed his intelligence at a very young age. Not only was the peshwa smart, but he also showed courage and bravery.
