The concept of “bad” volunteering is unfortunately a sad reality and the differences amongst volunteering and voluntourism is very clear. I believe that volunteering and voluntourism are so vastly different they shouldn’t be categorized as the same, shouldn’t be marketed as the same program, and should not be associated with the same “work”. A volunteer should not be associated with voluntourism as its connotation is that the “tourism” aspect has taken over the “volunteer”. Individuals whose focus is on self-fulfillment rather than a commitment to learning, and developing a relationship with the community they are visiting - has given “volunteers” a bad image. As a volunteer, you aren’t present to be the savior of an underprivileged community,
