How social determinants impact the health and wellbeing of communities.
Introduction
The film Bad Sugar: Diabetes in the Native American Tribes focuses on the life of the Pima and Tohono O’odham peoples who are indigenous to the land of Arizona, who suffer from arguably the highest rate of diabetes in the world. This reflects the social model of health, and incorporated sociological factors such as poverty and a history of racism and prejudice that have had long lasting impacts on the proper dispersal of food and nutrients needed for sustaining a healthy community.

The social model of health is focused around social, political, environmental, economics and psychological factors that contribute to the health of an individual (Warwick and Booth, 2008). Therefore, the idea of oneself being healthy is a social construct made by all the factors that contribute to the social model of health. And the social model of health can be linked to the disciplinary lens of sociology and health. Sociology is focused around the interactions between individuals and groups of people. The Economic theory proposed by Karl Marx correlates with this film. The theory suggests that the inequality between the social classes that arises due to financial income, which is an outcome of capitalism along with the exploitation of the lower class, is the framework for society. As seen from the film, the economic environment that the Tohono and Pima people are living in, over 50% living below the poverty line, can be viewed as a major influence in the high diagnosis of Type II diabetes. This is because the immense poverty levels and the constant need to provide for their family can cause extreme levels of stress on an individual, and stress is argued to be a trigger for onset diabetes symptoms (Clare Bradley, 1988). The behavioral model of health suggests that individuals are rational decision makers, and that if the right resources are presented to them, then they will be able to maker’s decisions that will benefit their health instead of hindering it. This model of health places a majority of health responsibility on the individual instead of the society as a whole. The health psychology discipline argues that thought effects behaviour, thus affecting the choices that individuals make. The health psychology discipline also focuses on politics as well, ensuring that for any issue to be heard and thoroughly understood, it it important for it to be vocalized I a political manner. If the behaviour model of health was used to view the film, Bad Sugar, than it is probable that the Pima and Tohono people would be blamed for their current situation. Questions such as, “why don’t they move”, “why do they continue eating the food when they know it is unhealthy for them”, and “why don’t they as for the government to supply them with healthier food” would be posed. This is where the limits of the behavioral model present itself, due to the lack of social understanding; the model does not recognize that there are political, economic, and financial restraints that do not allow
