“There are two kinds of pride, both good and bad. ‘Good Pride’ represents our dignity and self respect. ‘Bad Pride’ is the deadly sin of superiority that reeks of conceit and arrogance” (John C. Maxwell). John C. Maxwell is considered by many one of the most influential leaders in the world. The American Management Association said that Maxwell was the number one leader in business. Business Insider and Inc. Magazine said that he was the most influential in leadership very relevant in looking at the perspectives of pride. Maxwell is saying that pride can be used two ways; if one chooses to use pride incorrectly there will be a poor outcome, however, if an individual uses pride the correct way, they will find great success in their results. …show more content…
For example, pride helps motivate people to achieve their goals. In the story, the narrator states, “It seemed so hopeless from the beginning that it’s a miracle that I didn’t give up”(172). This quote proves that the older brother was inspired through pride to accomplish his goal of getting Doodle to walk. Furthermore, pride strives individuals to help others. In The Scarlet Ibis, the older brother states, “I should have already admitted defeat, but my pride wouldn’t let me”(174). This quote justifies that pride pushes individuals to help others; the narrator’s pride would not let him give up on his goal to help his brother. Lastly, one will have pride once they achieve their goal. For example, in the story the narrator says “They did not know that I did it for myself; that pride, whose slave I was, spoke to me louder than all their voices”(173). This quote proves that one has pride after they accomplish their goal because the narrator says how he is proud of himself for teaching Doodle to walk. The narrator now carries pride knowing that he accomplished his goal. Having pride in the right way can be very rewarding. In summary, pride is a very good quality to possess as it brings motivation, strives people to help others, and a reward of one’s achievements. There are many reasons why having pride can be a positive characteristic. As one can see, there are many advantages of having pride. Pride can be a tremendous quality to possess when used correctly. On the other hand, pride can be vicious when used inappropriately. One should know well enough to use dignity with respect, not dishonor. Therefore, pride is an essential characteristic to have in hand because it motivates oneself to accomplish something, impacts one’s ability to help others for the better, and makes one proud of the what they have
