Time: The Foe
Two star-crossed lovers’ deaths arise due to fates toll occur within the suspenseful tragedy Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. The two foes fall desperately in love at first sight during the Capulet’s party then immediately plan to marry the day after. After the secret marriage takes place, Romeo is exiled and the friar devises a plan which causes both Romeo and Juliet to fall dead. Towards the end, Romeo sees that Juliet is dead and kills himself. However, the character Juliet turns out to be alive and awakes to the sight of Romeo dead so she boldly decides to do the same, and stabs herself with his dagger. This conclusion is a result of the coincidences and timings of Romeo and Juliet because of the bad premonitions both characters have of each other and the timing of their arrivals. …show more content…
The bad premonition that Juliet has of Romeo is when they are saying their farewells after spending the night with each other and Juliet mentions “Methinks I see thee, now thou art so low, as one dead in the bottom of a tomb. Either my eyesight fails, or thou looks pale” (3.5.55-57). In the quote, Juliet says that the next time she sees him, he is going to be pale at the bottom of a tomb. It is a coincidence because it just so happens that the net time they do see each other, Romeo is at the bottom of a tomb. Romeo also has a bad premonition of Juliet while he is in Mantua waiting for a message. He states, “I dreamt my lady came and found me dead…and breathed such life with kisses in my lips” (5.1.6-8). This is another coincidence since Juliet had the same premonition but from her perspective and later on, Juliet does kiss him right after he falls
