In the quote from Writing Without Teachers, Peter Elbow talks about his ideas on the process of writing. He says, “think of writing as an organic, developmental process in which you start writing at the very beginning – before you know your meaning at all – and encourage your words gradually to change and evolve” (Elbow). Elbow believes that you can’t know what you are going to discuss or to comment on until you are done writing and all of your thoughts finally come together to make sense. He also goes against the idea that writing is only a two-step process, saying that this is the wrong method to go about writing and is a backwards way of thinking. I agree with Elbow’s ideas because this is how I think about the writing process, and is how I write most of the time.…
However, I find that it is still more time-consuming to write than I would like. I would like to make more progress in simplifying the writing process…
I don’t like to work on my bed because it makes me want to give up and go to sleep. I also tend to work with some music playing and more often than not, a cup of coffee is with me. I typically work on the rough draft sporadically the day before it is due and sometimes that means also late into the night. If I can, as in not wait until the night before, I like to give myself breaks so I do not get into a writing rut. Sometimes I will come back to the paper later even after I think I have finished it and add things too it.…
This is just meant to give me a rough idea of what I am going to talk about. After the outlining I begin to type my first draft. This is typically a long, painstaking process for me. I try to get everything just so in the first draft, knowing that there will be at least two or three more to come. Once I finish the initial draft I sleep.…

My first year at Colorado College helped me identify where I should focus my efforts to improve my writing in the future. The most significant gain from my first year here has been a clearer understanding of my writing process. This has resulted in realizing a number of ways to improve my writing. Besides time management, I have identified some areas where I can improve my actual writing. I need to structure my writing time better: planning my essay before I begin writing, keeping an updated copy of my outline on hand, giving myself interim deadlines, and allowing plenty of time for editing.…
And more time to do things. My writing process is a step by step method. Consisting of first I gather my material that I need; Paper, sharpened pencils, a snack, a radio with CD’s, a blanket or sheet, and a big or multiple Chai Tea Lattes. Second I make sure whether I am in comfortable clothes according to my two writing places. In my room I would be most comfortable in my undergarments.…
As a writer I work best in quiet places where I have the ability to write with no interruptions. My mind has to be completely free of all other thoughts to write a great paper. Having time beforehand to think about what I am going to write about helps me to be able to sit down and immediately start writing. I also feel successful when I not only write a lot, but when all of the writing is good, I feel as though I have many strengths as well as weaknesses.…
I am not the kind of person that can whip out a paper the night before or create a masterpiece from nothing, but I can write an essay or story without it being too much work. Due to all the reading I have done writing to me is almost as natural as talking. Also, I am quite good at knowing how to divide writing to make it less work. Some writers I have come to know write until they can't write anymore and that's when the stop, wearing themselves out in the process. When I write I pace myself knowing went to stop and when to pick it back up again.…

Everyone should know that feeling of an instant writer's block, that makes them feel like a complete idiot when they're writing an essay. If you've never felt that way before, then maybe you're a genius or you're not me. Most teachers prepare their students well enough to be able to knock down any challenges faced when they're asked to write an essay or term paper. I'll agree that writing can be difficult, especially when you're at a cram for time, but writing is an important part of a student's academic life. Ever since I was in grade school, I was asked to write.…

I enjoy writing in a quiet atmosphere, having ample time to complete my essay, or research paper. Finding the proper time, and the proper atmosphere is something that I find difficult to do. Many times as I am sitting down to start writing, I find myself drifting away in my own thoughts. I have to really focus on what I want to be writing in order to get started. Nonetheless, once I begin writing I can focus with ease, which is a strength of mine.…
After reviewing my ideas and deciding exactly what the best approach would be to address the given prompt, I write a rough draft, then I start typing my final copy. As I am typing my final draft I revise sentences, correct spelling and grammar, and occasionally add or take away a sentence. Once my essay is completely written, I use the spelling and grammar check and fix mistakes that it may find. I then print my essay out and let a couple people read it and fix any mistakes they find. I ask them for suggestions on how to combine sentences and have a better variety of sentences.…
