“Bad habits” are the products to two dangerous things: boredom and stress. Now, the cause of people’s stress or boredom may differ, but ultimately, habits are created through these two factors (Clear). While it may seem near impossible to get rid of one or the other, there are solutions. A seven step method towards “kicking a bad habit to the curb” can provide the opportunity needed to jumpstart the transition towards healthier habits; starting with the first step, having the desire to change (Widener).

Given, the third step is the hardest step, but, luckily, you have two options to choose from. The first is commonly referred to as going “cold turkey”. This method insists on cutting out and removing all tempters or obstacles that may prevent a person from breaking their habit. For example, someone who has a habit for eating too much junk food may get rid of all fattening foods from their home completely and may even get a gym membership. The other method is referred to as “weening off”. For instance, unlike the sudden, extreme change in the previous method, “weening off” allows people to ease out of a habit by slowly limiting use, portions, tolerance, etc. An example in smoking cigarettes would be to either smoke a fewer number of cigarettes with time and/or to transition to substitutes such as electric cigarettes or nicotine gum (Widener). According to author and teacher, James Clear, the most effective way to overcome this step is to replace it (Clear). A good replicate for junk would be fruits and vegetables and a good replicate for smoking may something as simple as chewing gum.
The fourth step is to tell somebody you are willing to let help you break your habit. By telling somebody, you are not only holding yourself accountable, but you now have someone who will keep you accountable, who will help prevent you from giving into your habit, and who will support you through your process.
