In response to the tragic terrorist attacks that occurred in Paris, killing over 130 civilians, Swift tweeted a picture of herself on the Pont des Arts in France. The image depicts Swift, back turned to the camera, looking out across the river. The colors within the picture are muted, and because she has her back turned and is alone, it appears that she is in solemn thought, connecting to the serious tone of her message. Captioned “Praying for Paris. Our hearts are breaking for and with you,” Swift tells not only the people of France, but also the world, that she is alongside them (Twitter, Paris). Swift uses the emotional impact of solidarity during loss and fearful times to demonstrate that she cares and is aware of events that take place and impact people other than herself. In the chapter “The Corner” pages 290-291, from the book In Cold Blood, by author Truman Capote we will take an inside look at how Capote takes advantage of rhetorical strategies to convey his attitude towards Perry Smith. Throughout the book Capote writes about the story behind the Clutter family murders from the eyes of the townspeople and the murderers, both Perry Smith and Richard Hickock, while doing so we can see the contrast of attitude that Capote has towards both Smith and Hickock. In this way, Capote uses strategies of characterization, and pathos to convey the words of Perry Smith. In the beginning of page 290 we start off with the thoughts of Perry, in which he describes to us, through characterization, how Ms. Meier was a “terrific cook” and how “you ought to taste her Spanish rice” he then goes off to talk to…

Although it appears Capote is only cautiously sitting back on the impending arrests of Dick and Perry he is truly stressing the complexity of Perry’s unstable mental state; therefore, questioning the potential change of fate if one’s psychiatric health is addressed. Society is quick to place blame upon the shoulders of the guilty without looking past their actions. Yet, Capote creates this spine tingling moment which forces one to believe in the inside battles rather than the actions that play out. The use of juxtaposition within Perry’s account only demonstrates the sickening reality that was placed in his hands: “I wasn’t kidding him. I didn’t want to harm the man.…

I believe it is difficult to do so in a scene where a good handful of people do not give you the full respect deserved. In the article “Congregation Gone Wild”, G. Jeffrey MacDonald claims that Congregations have shifted their way of approaching their audience in order to “sooth” churchgoers and keep them on their side.…

In the song, Swift describes the early stages of the relationship using the simile, “autumn leaves falling down like pieces into place”, which can be assumed to mean how complete and whole she felt while with him while also referencing the time frame, which would be autumn (Stanza 2, verse 3). Throughout the song, Swift repeats the phrase “I remember it all too well”, basically enforcing her feelings that this relationship was impossible to forget and she remembers every detail clearly because that is how much it had an impact on her life (Stanzas 4, 5, 6, 7, 8). She further enforces the statement by adding lines such as “I can picture it after all these days” and “’cause there we are again” (stanza 2, verse 3; stanza 4, verse 1). She also mentions the heartbreaking details she remembers, such as “in the middle of the night, we dance around the kitchen in the refrigerator light” which cleverly uses rhyme in “night” and “light” to add some flow to the lyric (stanza 8, verse 2). “We’re singing in the car, getting lost Upstate”, “you almost ran the red ‘cause you were looking over at me”, “I left my scarf there at your sister’s house”, are all lines that reinforce the idea that Swift was able to remember the tiniest specifics about their…
