The slogan, “Hug me! I’m vaccinated,” was formed to encourage more people to get vaccines so diseases that can be avoided aren’t unnecessarily spread. (Chrisman-Campbell, Kimberly). This promotion of vaccines would be less common if it wasn’t for Jonas Salk’s scientific advancements that lead him to create the first dead vaccine for polio. This all started in college when Salk decided to study microbiology instead of law, which was what he originally intended to major in.…
Even as modern medicine has significantly produced the current quality of life, work on behalf of the average person could improve it more. This day and age provides modern wonders such as heart transplants, chemotherapy, and arthroscopic surgery. However, due to unfounded claims and improper scientific study, some of the population (namely the affluent and gullible) has started to believe that vaccination causes diseases or disorders, instead of preventing them. It is important to be properly vaccinated because proper vaccination creates herd immunity, saves lives, and helps prevent superbugs from being born. Despite the claims of several celebrities, vaccination is not a bad thing.…
Eighteen day old, Mariana Sifrit died Tuesday morning from the HSV-1 virus, commonly known as bacterial meningitis. Upon noticing that Mariana had refused to eat and wake up while at their wedding, newlyweds Nicole and Shane Sifrit, rushed Mariana to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, where she was diagnosed with the herpes virus, mostly likely contracted by kiss; both parents tested for herpes and results were negative. Because a newborn’s first month of life is when the infant is most at risk to contract serious illnesses as bacterial meningitis, it is extremely important to stay vigilant for conditions that could put an infant at risk. The herpes virus can potentially develop into meningitis, and in Mariana’s case, she had contracted meningitis which caused serious complications. As Mariana’s condition rapidly deteriorated, she was airlifted to University of Iowa’s Children’s Hospital to be stabilized and undergo dialysis for liver failure.…
Laboratory Findings Bacterial meningitis is the most common suppurative infection of the central nervous system (Mitropoulos, Hermsen, Rotschafer, 2012). It is rapid progressing and can lead to death or debilitating effects if not diagnosed and treated quickly. In order to diagnose a patient with bacterial meningitis a cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) examination is necessary. To obtain the CSF from a patient a lumbar puncture is usually done.…
It was not until 1887 that the causative agent, Neisseria meningitidis, was iden-tified in the spinal fluid of patients by Anton Weichselbaum. Meningococcal has had some form of impact on nearly every part of the world. The World Health Organization has estimated that meningococcal disease was the cause of 171,000 deaths world-wide in 2000. In the nineteenth century, meningococcal infections were treated using serum ther-apy and sulfonamides introduced by Flexner in 1913. By the 1960s, the development of resistance to sulfonamides prompted the discovery of the first vaccines against meningococcal…
The number of deaths worldwide fell from 544,00 in 2000 to 146000 in 2013 (World Health organization, 2014). There is a high probability that an unvaccinated person will develop the…
We suspected the Flu and meningitis for almost all the patients. So we decided to test for meningitis first. We first tested Sue for meningitis because she was our first patient. We found that Sue did infact have bacterial meningitis. So we needed to test the rest of the patients that might have come into contact with Sue in the last week.…

be vaccinated should remain approved everywhere in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration. To give an historical background to this controversy, vaccines became available to citizens in the nineteenth century. Then, there were many deadly diseases spreading rather quickly and violently, like whooping cough, small pox, measles, and polio, just to name a few. Physicians and other health care professionals had to come up with a cure to save millions of lives during that time of crisis with very little resources and technology. Edward Jenner, a well-known English doctor, saved the world from small pox when he discovered a vaccination that stamped out obtaining the evil illness.…
Meningitis is an inflammation of the brain and spinal cord, most often caused by viral infection, while bacterial and fungal infections are also possible causes. The first major recorded outbreak of Meningitis was in Geneva, in 1805. Meningitis can affect anyone, regardless of age, race or ethnicity, but the groups that are most susceptible to infection are infants between the ages of 6 and 18 months of age, children under the age of 5 years old, young adults, elderly people and anyone with an illness or disorder that lower the body's innate ability to fight off diseases and pathogens. There are more than one type of Meningitis and they have different causes but they all spread through airborne respiratory droplets, such as, coughing and…
Perhaps it never comes out as an independent disease. There are many types of meningitis, and here are some of those; the (a) Viral meningitis, (b) Bacterial meningitis, (c) Meningococcal disease, (d) Pneumococcal meningitis, (e) TB or Tuberculous/Tubercular meningitis, (f) Group Streptococcal, (g) Hib meningitis, (h) Fungal meningitis and (i) the other types of meningitis. (Meningitisnoworg, 2016)…
The aftermath of patients who have suffered with meningitis may be brutal and it is up to family members to support…
Environment can be a factor in the spread of meningitis, for instance countries such as Africa have a high rate of meningitis infection often resulting in wide spread epidemics, this is due to winter wind carrying dust that damage the throat and lungs making it easy for meningitis causing bacteria to enter the body, also vaccines are not as readily available in these countries as they are in Europe and other Western…
The common symptoms of bacterial meningitis are fever, vomiting, severe and persistent headache, stiff and painful neck, confusion, unconsciousness, and seizures. In infant or young children, they experience fever, cold, unusual cry, rapid breathing, or grunting, refusing food, and vomiting.
