Explanations:
1. I chose the answer subacute bacterial endocarditis, because the symptoms were very similar to the 24 year old biology student of the case study. When someone has this infection they tend to have a fever for several weeks, and she did. A sign of an increase in temepature in the body is fever; therefore this is another symptom of Subacute Bacterial Endocarditis. This disease can also be caused by a gum infection and the patient had minor dental surgery. The patient also had enlarged cervical lymph nodes; this symptom is also listed as well. This answer best matches all the symptoms the student is experiencing.

The type of heart failure that patient A.O. seems to be presenting with is left sided heart failure. The clinical findings in this situation that indicate left sided heart failure are dyspnea and activity intolerance (notes or books). Left sided heart failure can cause problems with the right side of the hear as well which could explain the pedal edema. Other clinical findings that are commonly seen with left sided heart failure are decreased cardiac output and pulmonary congestion. The decreased cardiac output would cause activity intolerance and signs of decreased tissue perfusion (kidneys).…

After my gram staining I was able to comfortably eliminate all of the gram negative results. This encouraged me in knowing that I was able to execute an experiment efficiently enough to eliminate some of my choices. I was also able to eliminate all of the streptococcus bacteria because my bacteria was in clusters and not in a chain arrangement. Gram staining also helped me in eliminating the bacilli because my interpretation of the observation was that my unknown bacteria was spherical in nature and not a rod. Additionally, she has bilateral peripheral pitting oedema and has had a cough. These are all signs and symptoms of chronic cardiac failure as recognised by the Heart Foundation (2015).
