Bacteria and fungi are all around us; they are in our food, on our clothes, in our bodies, and in our homes. But, does the bacterial diversity change from indoors to outdoors? Is it different depending on who and what lives inside the house? Barberan et al 2015 examined the diversity of bacteria and fungi in 1200 homes across the United States. They were looking to see if the type of pet, number of men and women inhabitants, and climate had any impact on the bacteria and fungi residing in the homes. Barberan et al (2015) had people swab their homes (1200 in total) inside and outside for bacterial and fungal diversity. Bacterial diversity depends on the number and gender of people and the types of pets. The fungal diversity was found to be dependent upon the climate of the environment around the house. According to previous studies, Barberan et al (2015) knew the bacterial diversity would be affected by the number of dogs in the home; however, this was the first study to demonstrate that bacterial diversity would also be affected by the number of cats. Bacterial diversity is impacted by the population of men and women in the house. Barberan et al (2015) noted that a certain species of bacteria were only found in homes with no female residents. They believed this was because of the variances in bathing habits of men versus women. Likewise, Barberan et al (2015) noticed that there was a strain of bacteria only present in homes with females. This was probably because this strain is known to be vaginaly associated. They also recorded that the fungal diversity changed based on the location of the house-- for example, the state. Barbern et al (2015) concluded that if a person wanted to change the bacterial diversity within their home, then it would be best to live with different people since the number of men and women had the greatest impact on bacterial diversity.
