Each year, 48 million people in the U.S. get sick & 3,000 of them die from contaminated food. Foodborne illness i the contamination of food due to pathogenic bacteria, viruses, or parasites and there are many ways to prevent this illness. In this paper I will inform you on the different ways this can happen and how to prevent these things. Bacterial foodborne infections are contracted upon the consumption of the bad food. The bacteria continues to grow in the intestines, setting up an infection which causes illness. Bacteria may already be present in foods when they are purchased. Raw foods like meat, poultry, fish, shellfish, eggs, unpasteurized dairy products, and some fresh or raw produce. Staphylococcus aureus , better known as staph aureus , is the most common bacterial infection . This bacterium is found on the skin and hair as well as in the nose and throat of people and animals. These bacteria are present in up to 25 percent of healthy people and are even more common among those with skin, eye, nose, or throat infections. Staphylococcus can cause food poisoning when a food handler contaminates food and then the food is not properly refrigerated. Other sources of food contamination include the equipment and surfaces on which food is prepared. These bacteria multiply quickly at room temperature to produce a toxin that causes illness. Staphylococcus is killed by cooking and pasteurization. Salmonella is the second most common intestinal infection in the United States.…
