Shaking For Butter Butter is so good! You can bake with butter and top just about anything with it, but how is it made? What ingredients make it so delicious?
“Butter is the fatty portion of milk, separating as a soft whitish of yellowish solid when milk or cream is agitated or churned. ”(The Definition of Butter) Butter is used for many different things. It can be used as a spread usually on bread and it could be used for baking adding a nice texture and flavor to baked goods. “Butter consists of butterfat, milk proteins and water.” (Butter)Cream has a very big part in making butter. “Cream is the fatty part of milk, which rises to the surface when the liquid is allowed to stand unless homogenized.”(The

“Churning butter is the butter made at any one time.”(The Definition of Churning) It is basically shaking or mixing cream around until butter has formed. You can churn by hand or by a machine. “The earliest churns were goatskins or other primitive containers in which cream could be agitated. Skin bags were sometimes used by Asian nomads to turn their cream into butter by just shaking the skin bags until the butter was formed.” (Ways of Churning Butter: Butter). Many people have also used the regular glass jar as a quick, but tiring, way to get a great snack. One of the most popular historical ways of churning butter is the dash churn. “The dash churn, familiar to farm homes for centuries, consisted of a tall, narrow, nearly cylindrical stone or wood tub fitted with a wooden cover.” (Ways of Churning Butter: Butter) It also had a pole down the middle for agitating the butter. It also tastes very bad when rancid.
