Backbiting is one of greatest sins you can commit in any religion. Backbiting is a sin every human begins commits. There are many different punishments for backbiting in the many different religions. In Islam backbiting is a major sin and the punishment for it is hell fire. In the Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne you can also see how the Puritan society deals with backbiting. The puritan society believes that must not judge of the action by the person but of the person by the action. Islam and the Puritan society both have different perspectives on backbiting.

If all of the things that were happening in the scarlet letter happend in Islam nobody would be safe on the Day of Judgement. Islam says that backbiting is like eating the flesh of your own dead brother. In aya 12 of surah Hujurat it mentions that. Imagine eating the flesh of your own dead brother thats not something anyone would want to do which shows how major backbiting is. There is also a Hadith about backbiting that says I asked the Messenger of Allah: Who is the best Muslim? The Messenger of Allah replied, "He is the one from whom Muslims are safe from the evil of his tongue and hands.” this just shows that the impact of not committing the ssin will make a pure good muslim. If you do commit the major say the only way that it would get erased is if you first as to repent and pray for forgiveness, and that is between him and Allaah. If he knows that any of his words reached the person about whom he was speaking, then he should go to him and ask him to forgive him. This repentance is a long process at the end of the day you just should stay away from backbiting so you don't have to into the long process of repentance.
