Bacillus Anthracus Lab Report

The purpose of this experiment was to swab a chosen object, isolate a microorganism, and identify the microorganism through a series of morphological, physical, and biochemical tests. One chose to swab David Phelps’ pastor dreamer, which is one of the larger statues on The University of Oklahoma’s campus. The nose of this statue was swabbed and is where one’s environmental isolate originated. Through morphological, physiological, and biochemical experiments, one was able to gather results that revealed that the environmental isolate is a Gram-negative bacillus that grows best at 37 °C. Additionally, it is a non-motile obligate aerobe that produces endospores, possesses a capsule, and is a non-hemolytic microorganism. Through these experiments along with other significant tests one was able to determine the species as Bacillus anthracis. The species Bacillus anthracis can live in the soil where the microbe traveled from onto the statue.

One of the main goals was to learn the proper procedures and techniques used on daily basis by microbiologists and other working professionals. Some of the same procedures used throughout this lab are used by scientists working to discover more information on their own bacterial species (1). Additionally, one learned how to organize and keep up to date a laboratory notebook that contains pertinent information. By using the lab notebook with systematized exercises’ results, one categorized the environmental isolate’s characteristics by morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics which allowed one to identify the genus of this
