Baccalaureate Degree and Lifelong Learning
Nursing is a very important career in which many factors need to be taken seriously. I agree with two recommendations from the "Institute of Medicine: The first one is recommendation number four, which “recommends that an increase of nurses with baccalaureate degree to 80 percent by 2020”. The other recommendation I agree with is number six, which says that is “recommended that nurses engage in lifelong learning throughput their nursing career”. I choose this two recommendations because if this recommendations were implemented, then the quality of care to patients will be enhanced.

Each year new diseases are discovered, research and science has become aware of more potential health threats that nurses need to be aware of in order to care and educate patients. New treatments have been discovered for many illness, so is important to engage in lifelong learning because it benefits both the nurse and patients. Evidence-based practice and lifelong learning is needed when making care plans for any patient. According to the article Lifelong Learning: Fostering a Culture of Curiosity, “in order to assure patients optimal care, nurses must be well versed in the most accurate and current information in clinical practice… and they need an expansion of knowledge related to the most current clinical treatments, procedures, and practices”. New technology has also challenged many nurses from the 20th century, as well as new updated skills that were not done before are now being implemented. In essence, “having enough nurses with the right kinds of skills will contribute to the overall safety and quality of a transformed healthcare system” (The Future of Nursing: Focus on Education). The beauty about nursing is that nurses are free to critical think about a patient conditions, they are free to make questions, and research information. It is important for anyone to remain curious throughout lifetime since that is the way one keeps learning. When a nurse thinks that she/he knows it all, and that there is no need to research then sadly that person stopped learning. Curiosity and desire are essential in the nursing field/ clinical practice. Nurses need to embrace lifelong learning not only as a professional necessity to self-improve, but to seek out better opportunities or advancements, while benefiting the field of nursing/ wellbeing of the nation.
