The baby friendly initiative is a global program started in 1991 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF focused on improving the role of maternity services to encourage mothers to breastfeed to help babies get the best start in life. These health agencies recommend that babies are breastfed exclusively for their first six months of life. The primary goal is to improve prenatal care of mothers, mother/baby care after delivery, and provide services and care that promote and support breastfeeding. In this paper I will address the criteria needed for accreditation, the four targets of the Innocenti Declaration, and give an overview of the program since it began.
The criteria needed for a hospital to receive accreditation of Baby Friendly must have a written breastfeeding policy, ensure all staff is trained in accordance with facility policy, inform all pregnant mothers of the benefits of breastfeeding, and encourage and assist mothers to breastfeed within thirty minutes after delivery. Additionally, do not give infants any supplements other than breastmilk, do not give pacifier, assist first- time mother how to breastfeed, be supportive and patient when teaching how her how to breastfeed. …show more content…
Targets of the Innocenti Declaration are: Appointment of a national breastfeeding coordinator of appropriate authority, and establishment of a multicultural national breastfeeding committee; Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding (the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative) practiced in all maternity facilities; Global implementation of the International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes and subsequent relevant World Health Assembly Resolutions in their entirety; Enactment of imaginative legislation protecting the breastfeeding rights of working women; and establishment of means for enforcement of maternity protection (UNICEF,
