Alabama will join Ohio and New Jersey as one of three states in the nation to offer expecting mothers a free Baby Box.
Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley announced earlier this week the program, a partnership with The Baby Box Co., Alabama Rural Development Office, Alabama Department of Public Health and numerous others, expects to distribute 60,000 Baby Boxes in 2017. The boxes, available after a mother watches a 15-20 minute video online at the Baby Box University website, are made of durable cardboard and contain a firm box-sized mattress and other baby care items in an effort to decrease the state’s infant mortality rate. The program, which is based on Finland’s program for encouraging expecting mothers to receive prenatal care, is being used to raise awareness of safe sleeping practices and help prevent

“This statewide program encourages new and expecting parents, of all socioeconomic backgrounds, to take advantage of this free educational program, which can be the difference between life and death. We ultimately want to reduce the infant mortality rate in Alabama and assist families in raising happy, healthy babies.”
Experts and researchers do caution expecting parents not to think of the box, as a basinet, which has firmer frames and leg supports, if it is used as a baby bed and not to let the Baby Box University program substitute prenatal care, which is still the best way to ensure a baby’s health. Overall, the Baby Box program has proved effective: It has helped Finland drop its infant mortality rate to one of the lowest in the world, 3.0 per 1,000 live births.
To receive a baby box in Alabama, register for free online at babyboxuniversity.com as an Alabama resident, watch the instructional video and then select to either pick-up your baby box or have it delivered to the address you provided when

The controversial topics of swaddling and co-sleeping peaked my interest because I had heard about both parenting methods when trying to get a newborn to sleep but never knew if the methods were safe or not. While gaining observation hours for my Pre-Occupational Therapy major, I observed an occupational therapist swaddle premature babies in the hospital. The occupational therapist said that the technique stimulated the idea that the infant was back inside his or her mother’s womb. As a result of seeing how occupational therapists use the swaddling method to help calm the infant, I was intrigued to find out more about the advantages and disadvantages of swaddling an infant. Additionally, I chose both topics to discover the controversial…

Comfort is a warmth we feel in our bones. It is a sense of security curious in nature. We find it in the arms of a loved one, between the sleeves of family photo albums, and in the cushions of our favorite shoes; or, in my case, in the stitches of my favorite blanket. It is amazing how we can find comfort in the simplest of things. I have had my baby blanket for so long it may as well have been another sibling.…

With health as our main issue, my service group traveled to the DC Diaper Bank on Tuesday, November 17, to get a glimpse of what the organization was about. We were welcomed with open arms, and shown an informational film about the non-profit. The organization is similar to a food pantry, but instead they focus on diapers, and infant needs. The four of us were placed at the last four volunteer stations, as the non-profit was not in an active search for volunteers. Our first job was to wrap sets of twenty-five diapers in saran wrap, according to their size.…

After reading the Baby X document as well as watching the TedX I really thought about how much my family’s lives have revolved around gender roles. Growing up I was raised as a normal female child would be. My mother had me playing with Barbie dolls, baking, playing dress up, and of course I loved the color pink as it was in most of the items of clothing I wear. My brothers on the other hand both grew up playing legos, and their room has always been painted blue. When we were younger they both were placed into sports such as lacrosse, basketball, and soccer; while I played tennis and did swim team, sports which seem daintier, definitely less contact involved.…

A Choice or a Chance for illness? Vaccinations decrease the chance for a person to get in infection. The chemicals entering the body system function with their body’s natural resistances to safely build an immunity to the disease being treated.
