Since 1938, Finland’s government has given expecting mothers a “baby box”. This box contains a starter kit of clothes, diapers and baby products. In addition, bedding and a mattress were included so the box could be used in place of a crib. The baby box program began as an incentive for low income families to see a physician for prenatal care in exchange for items that are essential when expecting a baby (Zimmerman, 2014). The many positive outcomes from the program could not have been predicted. When the program began, Finland had a very high infant mortality rate, about 65/1000LBY (Lee, 2013).
