Motivation and emotion are vital in understanding the psychological aspects contributing to, or resulting in, the behavior of an individual. Emotion can be defined as being any intense reaction to an internal or external stimulus which will subsequently interrupt other action, or spur necessary action to occur in a different direction. Motivation is any component of an individual’s life which makes him want to work harder to achieve a goal; this stimulation can either be of an internal drive, or an external one. For this essay, I chose not to discuss emotion, but rather detailed motivation for behavior through discussing several corresponding theories. One such theory is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. According to Abraham Maslow’s theory of the mid-20th century, individuals, in order reach their fullest potential (defined by him as reaching self-actualization) must first achieve biological and human needs. This theory can be organized into a triangle with five rows. From bottom to top, the five needs are as follows: physiological, in which an individual needs to be properly nourished, otherwise death would ensue; safety, in which a human being has to feel secure to focus on anything beyond; belonging and love, in which humans need companionship to strengthen confidence in themselves, and this leads to the next step; esteem, a division in which an individual feels established and proud of his feats; and the final tier is self-actualization, in which a human being is where he wants, and is destined to be. It is believed that self-actualization can never be truly reached, as this step is a process in which there is always going to be room for self-improvement. Both Democratic and Republican nominees for president demonstrate Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Both candidates look healthy; a viewer can tell that both are receiving proper nourishment, and are kempt. These candidates also feel safe; both feel comfortable debating in front of an audience, and for the national audience. Although Trump has never had a career in politics, he is considered by some to be a good candidate for president, as he is believed to have the capability to pull our nation out of debt. In this light, the United States of America has turned something into a major corporation, which is struggling to stay afloat. Trump, a billionaire businessman, thinks he can “Make America Great Again,” through employing trickle-down economics. Since Trump enjoys thriving in business, and strives to be competent in this area, he thinks that achieving the presidency will be a step to achieving self-actualization, in which he can pull an entire country out of its debt, rather than just his own businesses. Clinton has a stellar career in politics including running for president in 2008, and being a stellar, gifted senator for eight years. If she were to win the presidency this year, her political goals will have been realized, as this is a dream which she has sought for almost a decade. Voters tend to find the desire to achieve goals and aspirations to be appealing, and may choose to cast their ballots for either candidate in this
