Abstract
There are approximately 76 million baby boomers in the United States. These are the people that were born between 1946 and 1964. Baby boomers make up one-third of the workforce in the United States. Unfortunately, there are not enough younger workers to replace the older workers. Labor shortages in key industries will force a radical rethinking of recruitment, retention, flexible work schedules and retirement.
According to forbes.com, about 38% of the baby boomers are set to retire by the end of this decade. 35 % say that they will work part time just for the interest and enjoyment. 26% say that they will work mainly for the income. 17% say that they have a plan …show more content…
In fact, studies show that employers report that older workers have greater knowledge of the job task they perform than younger workers. The older workers were willing to learn a new tasks quickly, bring wisdom and resilience to work. They were also able to keep up with the physical demands that their jobs required.
Most companies haven’t thought far enough into the future. They have been so busy cutting costs and sending jobs overseas in order to stay in business that they’ve not been training new talent properly. It’s important to hire the right person for the job, but the right person just may be someone older. If an employer selects the right people, they will make their company stronger and better.
Older workers face some barriers in the workplace. Older workers have reduced employment opportunities. Some who are returning to the workforce have a hard time finding a job with the salary that they are used to and because of that there are few options that are available to them. Older workers who make a career change also find it harder to find a job with the salary or opportunity that they are looking for. Employers take that in consideration when hiring older workers. For example, if an older worker has a family emergency, they may be force to work inflexible hours. In some cases, older workers do not like to telecommute for a job because it is inconvenient. A lot of older workers like to travel on their time off and they like to take time off when they want to. There are private and public workplace policies that encourage early retirement through incentives
Hiring older workers has its benefits. They are dedicated, which produce higher quality work and saves money. Older workers are very punctual and on time. They look forward to going to work every day. They are very focused and attentive, which saves a company money. Older workers are good listeners and are very easy to train. They only have to be told once what needs to be done in most cases. Older workers take pride in their job which is rare when it comes to the younger
