A lack of job opportunities could also be due to the cultural shift of the large cohort born between 1946 and 1964, also known as ‘baby boomers’ who are working longer than previous generations. This is backed up by Mermin, Johnson and Murphy (2007), who concluded that “the mean self-reported probability of working full time past age 65 among workers aged 51 to 56 increased from 27% to 33%” (p. 293). Although job insecurity can be detrimental to one’s mental and emotional health, longer careers for the baby boomer generation has many positive factors including those on a macro level such as increasing government revenue, and promoting economic growth.
