Pregnancy begins at conception, then moves into the first, second, and third trimesters where the baby beings it development and entrance into the world. During pregnancy, week 9 to 38 is when we see the most growth and development of the baby. When a baby is born prematurely they are at a high risk for many different complications. Premature birth occurs when a baby is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy. This occurrence may lead to more time spent in the hospital then originally planned. Babies born premature are often seen with different health problems that can become short-term or long-term effects. Short term effects on a preterm infant may evolve into long term effects as the baby develops. There are many different short term effects that can occur when a baby is born premature. When a baby is born premature it means that their bodies and organs did not have the full-time they needed to develop. When the baby is born with serious breathing problems it means that their lungs have not fully developed. This can lead to the baby needing extra support when it is born, such a ventilator that helps the baby breathe easier until the baby can breathe on his/her own. Babies born with serious breathing problems have a higher risk for asthma later in life, turning it into a long-term effect. Heart conditions found in preterm babies are usually PDA, or patent ductus arteriosus. This means that there is a persistent opening between two major blood vessels leading from the heart. This condition however, usually closes on its own, but if it does not and is left untreated the baby can have low blood pressure, which in turn
