But as he returns for the 100th Birthday dinner she is once more overcome with emotions for him. These emotions are felt by both of them which makes the General sorry he ever left Martine in the first place. The General thought he would never return to this place which brought him sorrow after leaving the love of his life but he has now returned for one last feast. Martine is brought to silence when the General announces his leave once more. This is the end again for her love that left her years before. The General is saddened when he leaves but promises Martine that she will no longer eat alone or be alone ever again for she will always be in his mind and heart. The way love is developed throughout the dinner shows how even though it is not always present, love can still return.
