In this scene, Amelia very much believes she and her son are being stalked by a crazy person the expressions and reaction to the deputies when they do not believe her help to sell this also. The younger deputies in the scene come off as rude. They laugh at Essie Davis and repel the audience, adding to the already growing empathy in the scene for Amelia. The main officer in the scene however; is not rude to Amelia, giving him a little more acceptance than the other two deputies but, the audience still does not like the main deputy in the scene because he did not help the struggling, panic stricken mother the officer tells her there is nothing they can do nicely, never once being rude to
