Baba In The Kite Runner

The Kite Runner is a book that gets more complex the more in depth you get into it. The Character development is fascinating, especially with a main character, Baba. Reading you see different sides of him and what he holds to the most, but is he a good man or a bad man? I believe Baba is a bad man for some of his actions that changed his relationship with Ali a childhood friend and servant, made his son wonder if his life was a lie, and a young boy who may never known who his brother was or his real father.

While living in Afghanistan Amir is taught by mullah or religious teachers and he learns about the religion of Pashtuns. “‘Good,’ Baba said, but his eyes wondered. ‘Now, no matter what the mullah teaches, there is only one sin, only

This causes many of Afghans to flee from their homes and country to avoid war and confrontations. Baba and Amir are on their way to Peshawar so they could try to get to America. “It’s his price for letting us pass...That was when Baba stood up...Ask him where his shame is...There is no shame in war...Tell him he’s wrong war doesn’t negate decency. It demands it ...”. Baba standing up like shows he may be good but why risk his life and maybe others if he don’t know the outcome? Maybe Baba feels guilty about something in his past that causes him to do these acts of justice and good. No one had asked or begged him to do anything. In this part of the story Amir tried to stop Baba from getting up but Baba pried away his hand and stood up anyways. Wouldn’t he want the safety of his son to be ensured? Baba’s pride gets the better part of him which can cause negativity to Amir and make Amir feel insecure along worrisome. Amir is called to Peshawar to go to Afghanistan to redeem himself and even his father. Afghanistan was taken over by Taliban and Amir was sent in by Rahim to find Hassan's son Sohrab. Rahim had told Amir a fact that made Amir's life feel like a lie. “They had Hassan-....No they didn’t...Yes they did!...No they didn’t, Amir...Then who-...I think you know who...”. Amir is trying to deny this fact that Hassan is his half brother because his father slept with his mother shortly the death of his own. So Baba went back on what he thought sin was, Baba had taken away Ali’s wife, he lied to both the children, he had even come close to taking the life of Karim who tried to get them safely to Peshawar.
