BPSOS Personal Statement

I have volunteered for the BPSOS health fair each October for the past three years. The BPSOS (Boat People SOS) is a nonprofit organization focused on helping refugees. This organization sponsors free health fairs held in Norcross, GA with many health services for anyone who stops by. The services include influenza vaccines, various types of screenings, and physical exams. I volunteered with doctors and nurse practitioners at the bone-density screening booth, where I helped with the screening of osteoporosis for the underserved population. I participated in working the machine that screened for bone density and teaching those with negative screenings about the importance of osteoporosis. This opened my eyes to how many people in the public did not have daily access to healthcare, and how important these free screenings were for them. The Emory School of Nursing values social responsibility and collaboration, striving to transform nursing and provide healthcare within diverse communities together. These values align with my own, as I have learned by giving patient care and building therapeutic relationships with numerous populations that we are all capable of caring for one another, regardless of where we are from or what our background is. At Emory, I will have the opportunity to attend school and work close to home with not only organizations like BPSOS, but also with the women and children refugee community in Clarkston, Georgia. Emory nursing would provide me with the resources I need to achieve an excellent education in the healthcare field and guide me in continuing to follow my dream, granting me the opportunity to provide care to the underserved population as an advanced practice

Today I drove to Minden Outpatient lab the girls there were nice and willing to teach me and showed me how everything worked there. I got a lot of draw there as the patients were nice to let me draw on them. Most of the people here were elderly and they had great stories of survival and how they had battled cancer. You could tell how alive they felt by the way they expressed themselves, it gave me another reason to be thankful for. I learned once more how important it is to properly identify the patients.…

When I first learned about osteopathic medicine I was attracted to the idea of the holistic approach of working with the patient to treat the whole body and not just the disease. This osteopathic philosophy is supplemented with what I had learned during my time as a Public Health student where the focused was on heath education with an emphasis on preventative medicine to help the individual and community. I came to this realization when I was observing an osteopathic family medicine physician interacting with a diabetic patient that was non-compliant with his medication that came in for a cut on his calf that was not healing properly. The physician proceeded to explain how by not taking his diabetic medication, affected his calf from healing…
