BHRC Community Analysis

I hope as a member of the BHRC community, I can offer my peers qualities that are unique and seen as necessary. As a member of the fellowship committee in my fraternity, I learned the importance of building strong bonds and being kind, compassionate, and supportive to one another. I also have taken many workshops dealing with conflict resolution, to be an aid in any problem that may arise. However, I believe my biggest attribute to this community would the prevention of these issues arising. My floor now jokingly refers to me as a ‘Mom,’ because I have a strong belief in supporting others. I hope that I can make my peers feel cherished or appreciated, a feeling that is sometimes hard to come by in a competitive classroom, when they are in my

Sometimes I wonder why, out of every city, town, and suburb in the entire country of the United States, my grandmother chose to move to Lynn, Massachusetts. A city otherwise rich in history, but unluckily dubbed over by an ingloriously annoying jingle, “Lynn, Lynn, city of sin, you’ll never come out the way you came in.” I heard it chanted through elementary school hallways, mocked by middle school kids, and hummed by high schoolers. You would think its omnipresence would keep away travelers, but, then again, my grandmother didn’t speak English. She came over from the Dominican Republic thirty-six years ago, with my mother and her five other kids.…

Almost four years ago, I entered Clackamas High School as a confused, shy, awkward freshman. Soon after entering the hallways of this school, I was assigned to a Freshman Assurance group and met with the group leaders. My group leaders were vivacious seniors, who were condescending and gave very little advice on high school. I felt a little intimidated by them, and the activities that they led made most of the freshmen in our group uncomfortable. They told us about their craziest stories and about the teachers who weren't of the most pleasant experience.…

“The simple truth is that you can understand a town. You can know and love and hate it. You can blame it, resent it, and nothing changes. In the end, you’re just another part of it.” This quote Brenna Yovanoff relates to me especially after I hit the age of two years old.…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

Aashi Mittal (7th Grader) WEB Application To me, my purpose has always been to help everyone feel more comfortable with not only each other, but also themselves. What compels me to be a WEB member is the way I felt when I was about to become a sixth grader, and oftentimes throughout my first two years here: Like I didn’t belong. It’s a hard feeling to forget, which is why I want to help the new incoming students of next year understand that their differences don’t have to be what set them apart. While these differences make them shine, having those differences makes them similar to everyone else, being that everyone is different.…

I asked Emily if she felt she was intellectually curious and was pleased that her response included providing an example of a discussion that she was part of, outside of a classroom format (where in-depth verbal analysis might otherwise be a requirement for a high course grade). Emily seemed self-motivated to engage in the exchange of ideas both inside and outside of the classroom. Emily recounted a rap session with her friends when the group dissected the movie “Still Alice.” In the movie, a 50-year old Columbia University linguistics professor slowly fell silent as a result of her battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Since Emily wants one day to be a physician, this conversation topic may have held particular interest for her.…

WHY I WANT TO JOIN THE HONORS PROGRAM Alighting from a Boeing 747 jetliner on the JFK tarmac on Thursday evening, April 28, 2016, I walked into what could be called a new page in my life story—a new start. That was my first time on this side of the hemisphere. With little money, zero friends, one close relative and little to hold on to, I found myself leaning on only a thread of asset – my mind. Knowing this, I vowed to keep this God given asset alive and growing with all my soul and might, and what better way to do this than to identify with people of like passion, people who will add to me.…
