BESR Bats

Aluminum bats have been around since 1973. They have progressed as the years have gone by, and have gotten lighter, faster, and have been given a larger sweet spot. But 12 years ago the BESR standard was introduced; this was the first restriction put on performance rather than just banning a type of bat. In my mind that means that it should be considered a “prototype”, or test in a sense, and was meant to be refined in the future. That refinement of BESR ended up as the BBCOR standard. We should use BBCOR instead of BESR bats in every league, because of performance, more accurate restrictions and no allowance of progressive bat improvement. One of the reasons we should use BBCOR bats in replacement of BESR bats in all leagues, is because BBCOR bats perform more like wood bats. This is because of numerous reasons, the most prominent being that the BBCOR standard encompasses the trampoline effect. This is when the bat bends back building up force and launches the ball forward in a way similar to someone jumping on a trampoline. This effect being lessened causes the speed of the ball off the bat to be decreased. This translates to less homeruns since they have less power, because at the college level they saw a decrease from about .945 homeruns per game a year before BBCOR to .48 homeruns after BBCOR (acs.psu.edu). Also with the bat …show more content…
This will reduce the number of injuries caused by dwindling reaction times. The decreased reaction time can be especially dangerous for pitchers who are the closest to the batter. On the other hand, it could also be argued that the performance increase can’t be too drastic since we have continued to use these bats for 12 years without noticing this defect. But I believe the performance increase may not have been as drastic before people noticed its presence and began to exploit

Being close to the handle means it has a bigger barrel, closer to the handle, so it gives you a better chance for you to hit the ball better. Wood bats’ center of mass is closer to the top of the bat, and has a fairly small barrel. The center of a bats’ mass is also normally known as the barrel of the bat. The third piece of evidence is that Mako’s have a faster batted ball speed.…

The Orioles recently resigned Chris Davis to a 7 year and $161 million dollar contract. As Jon wrote at the time (http://camdendepot.blogspot.com/2016/01/orioles-go-slightly-bananas-and-sign.html), Davis brings to the immediate a strong bat with a heavy right handed favored split. It’s pretty simple honestly, people like Chris Davis because he has elite power and can absolutely crush pitches. Meanwhile, CBS Sports (http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/25451265/report-chris-davis-agrees-to-7-year-deal-to-return-to-orioles) argues that he still strikes out a lot, but made small strides with his plate discipline last season.…

Have you ever pitched in baseball? If you have you know it would be beneficial if you could put something on your fingers to get a better grip on the ball, however the MLB doesn't think so they have been against gripping substances since they banned the spitball in 1920.Gripping substances should be available for MLB pitchers because the majority of batters are receptive to the idea, less batters might get hit by a pitch, and since the majority of pitchers use a substance it is difficult to punish all of the players. This year Anthony Rizzo of the Chicago Cubs was hit by 20 pitches one of them breaking his finger and getting himself a spot on the injured reserve. He is on pace to get hit by 53 pitches this year. Maybe If the the pitcher…

The presentation I went to was “Health Care in Dominican Bateyes” presented by Katie Shank and Elsa Schaefer. Two other students, Cathy Rice and Desiree Serrano, went on the trip but due to scheduling conflicts were unable to present their sections of the presentation. Professor Smith and Dr. Hart were also a part of the group that went to the Dominican Republic during J-term. I learned that they are planning to return not this J-term, but the one after that. Moreover, I learned that there was a lack of money, the need to set up the medicines differently, and other logistical challenges which made me wonder how much more of a positive impact they could have had it they did not run into these difficulties.…

Transgender issues in softball have become increasingly more aware in society, which brings up issues on the rules and regulations pertaining to the game. A transgender person should only be allowed to hit the ball size of their sex designated at birth unless they adhere to the rules and regulations pertaining to the league of choice. According to the United States Specialty Softball Association (USSSA) Official Rulebook, “men are not permitted to compete on women’s teams in USSSA sanctioned events” to ensure the safety of women players. This may seem a bit unfair, but when competing in women’s or coed softball tournaments there is a big difference.…

Player’s production from their peak (meaning when they are playing the best) of age 29 to the age 34 is when most players are performing at their best. Later, in years after their peak, players start to decline in their ability to hit and pitch at a high level, but one good thing starts happening when they start drawing walks and getting on base. That is good for players that are getting older because instead of getting out more often by swinging or looking at strike three older players develop over the years the knowledge of the strike zone that makes up for their decline in the ability to get hits so they start drawing walks and getting on base anyway many things can start happening from getting on base via the walk. “Baseball players exhibit a pattern of improvement and decline in performance; however, differing lengths of careers and changes in rules and characteristics of the…

The National Pastime Has Never Been the Same Pete Rose said it best when he said, I'd walk through hell in a gasoline suit to play baseball. Baseball is not simply our national pastime, it is something much more. Baseball is magical, where men can be boys and the sounds and smells of the ball park can last a lifetime. Where the cheers of the crowd from time long past can still be felt and almost heard when you take your seat in the stands.…
