All though not as obvious as the photo posted, a trend in BC Parks is to "harden surfaces" to accommodate increased traffic or high use areas in parks. For example: At Shannon Falls Park, the viewpoint became so popular that the trail was paved and a large landscaped viewing platform was installed. Now people do not need to think, be prepared or even have a sense they are in a park. I have mixed options on this example, on one hand the waterfall is available to all and the barriers have been removed but on the other hand increased visitation, harden surfaces have an impact on the environment and atmosphere. Moreover, it reinforce reductionist metaphors.
