BB And Clover: A Short Story

Improved Essays
A breath of fresh air! It smells like springtime. A gentle breeze tickles me and my six siblings. After taking a whiff of this new world we are all hungry. We swarm at mom like bees. I am pushed to the outside and have to wriggle my way to a teet. The milk is warm and delicious. It quiets my grumbling stomach and makes my eyes flutter with sleepiness. When I wake, mom licks me and snuggles me close to her. All of the other pups are asleep, except one who seems to be lying limp… I am not sure what is wrong with him. I still can’t see, but this new world feels extraordinary!

For weeks we continue each day with a routine, eat and sleep.

Today, I wake up and I feel different, bigger, older. My eyes are open and the world seems so bright.

We traveled deep into the woods for days on. We ate lizards, moles, and my favorite, acorns! It was delicious. We chased squirrels and other small prey as we galavanted through the woods. After time, things became less magical We were separated. The only thing I have left is BB and Clover. My family. BB is not so convinced on the idea of staying together. I informed everyone that we will not survive if we don’t stay together. We must have each other’s backs. I have developed an instinct for survival. Hide from humans, eat whatever you can find, and most important, stay quiet. We go on with life in our small pack, living on the bare minimum. I am developing nerves. The outdoors scare me, there is so much I don’t understand! I am truly considering life with the humans. BB shames me for these thoughts, but they sound reasonable to me. For weeks I have observed the human houses; too scared to come near them. I have worked up the courage now. To investigate the human homes. As I creep closer to a farmhouse, I get a weird scent, it must be human. What else could it be? I realize soon enough that it is not human I am smelling, but animal feces. There is a large pile of manure I stumble upon. It turns my vibrant yellow fur to a deep brown and gives it a smell that will keep anyone away. At least I am safe now, I think to myself feeling the comfort of the stench. I decide to take a rest on the porch while the others nap in the

In the article written by Jeremy Rifkin titled “A Change of Heart about Animals,” Rifkin argues that researchers have found that animals are similar to humans, which changes our perspectives of them. He elaborates how the research funded by fast food franchises reveal that pigs require mental and physical stimuli to function and how that caused European countries to change the way they treat pigs. The author extends on the similar emotional and cognitive abilities of animals and humans by demonstrating studies on the conceptual abilities of New Caledonian crows and the language abilities of Koko the gorilla. Rifkin continues to describe how animals have self-awareness and understand when they die, as evidenced by observations of orangutans…

We would pass a bunch of farm animals and open fields filled with big round rolls of hay either sitting across or in a straight line from each other. The scenery mainly consisted of clear fields, bright green trees, clear blue skies, bird calls and roaring cars. Sometimes, it would be a rainy day, on our drive up to the big old creaky house out in the middle of nowhere. It took about…

Falling asleep in a situation shows a degree of comfort, safety, and security. It is a vulnerable position, and can be costly if danger is afoot. There is significance, then, of this group falling asleep together as innocently as puppies. Describing these five as “puppies” associates them with innocence and youthfulness, two things they have not necessarily had the luxury of enjoying because of the world they grow up in. They are bound to one another, relying on each other.…

The Contrast Between Animality and Humanity in The Island of Doctor Moreau and Life of Pi One of the major cultural anxieties that prevails in society is the relationship between humans and animals and the distinction between humanity and animality. Humans are often depicted as being a higher form of animal, most commonly induced by religious practices. However, upon isolation or fear of death, the human thought process tends to revert to what is associated to animal-like behaviour. Humans tend to separate themselves from animal life forms as animals are seen as vicious, brutish and capable of committing acts that humans refrain from. Because of this cultural anxiety, much of literature embodies the ideology of animality and humanity and the…

It was almost as if the world was on a constant loop; a constant, boring, uninteresting, repetitive, loop that you weren’t able to drag yourself out of – well, there weren’t many ways to drag yourself out of this loop since this was how the world was now, especially being a woman at The Sanctuary. For some odd reason, Negan - the leader of your large group and a man you have only spoken to a handful of times before-, seemed to have a slight, one could say, protective aura when it came to women and letting them venture out into the new world. Today was nothing different. Waking up at the ass crack of dawn, you rested on your small mattress for a few minutes, staring up at the grey ceiling and listening to the light snores and breathing of your bunkmates who…

A fresh start, in my opinion means that you’re starting off good, and being good, it means you can try again, but do better this time,. I know it’s a good thing, for whenever I wake up, it’s a fresh start , I'm always hoping for the next day to go by because, It’s like you’re starting over, for example, in the movie, Groundhogs day, the main character, has the chance to restart the day, with a clean slate, trying to improve every time. As the metal gate crashed open all I could see were the two eyes of a horse I knew would be a great friend in the near future. “Hi, I am Boxer, and welcome to the farm” said the horse. “I’m Benjamen,” I replied while my eyes were still adjusting the the light. As I carefully stepped out of the trailer I saw tons of animals in a large open field grazing and having a good time with each other. I did notice that all of the pigs were wondering what was on the inside of the farmhouse.…
