The Aztecs strictly based their social classes on four main classes: nobility, commoners, serfs, and slaves. The first two classes were basically the higher and or upper class of the structure. The nobility and commoners could and would own land. These people would often be landowners, military commanders and or judges. The noble class consisted of high level priest, military leaders, government, and lords. Priest have their own class system and were kept to high expectations like being refraining from alcohol and being celibate. Failure to do any of these thing would often end in death or serious punishment. Nobles were most often inclined to tribute from commoners in the form of foods and goods. Noble status was passed on through family lineages. Only the nobles were aware to show off their wealth by wearing jewelry, decorated capes, etc. The commoner class were basically artisans, merchants, low level priest and farmers. Serfs were the lowest social class in the structure. Serfs were attached and assigned to land owned by nobles and required to perform labor for a certain amount of hours for a certain amount of free time. Serfs were for the most part slaves who were allowed to leave. Slaves were someone who worked on a nobles property without a release.
