When people think about the civilizations of Mexico, The Aztec Empire usually comes to mind. The colossal pyramids, brightly colored costumes, and courageous people who fought to resist their invasion by the Spanish are all features of the extraordinary Aztec Empire. The Aztecs came from the land of Aztlán. They abandoned Aztlán in the 12th century to seek a new location to live in. Their Sun and War god, Huitzilopochtli, instructed them to search for a certain sign that would let them know their new home was found. Throughout their journey, they settled in many places, and fought with other people who lived in the territory. Soon, they were captured by the tribes who joined forces against them. Over time, they were released and lived in a marshland. According to the legend, an eagle soon landed on a close island devouring a snake. This was the sign their god told them to search for. The Aztecs started building the city of Tenochtitlan.
