Over the history of the world there have been many different forms of government such as Totalitarianism, Monarchy, Republic, Communism and many others. One of the most widespread forms of government was Totalitarianism, though it is more rare today. Totalitarianism is a political system in which the state holds total authority over the society and seeks to control all aspects of public and private life wherever possible. Totalitarianism has been shown in practically every country at some point with the exception of the United States and few other countries. The setting of the book Anthem is a futuristic totalitarian society where the government officials control the people's lives from birth to death. Ayn Rand chose to build her society on the ideas of Russia and their totalitarian ways. When someone is born they are sent to the Home Of Infants where they will remain until they're five years old. Once the age of five is reached, they're sent to the Home of the Students until they turn fifteen. Upon their fifteenth birthday, they are sent to work. Once they turn forty years old, they are considered worn out and useless. They go to the Home of the Useless where they are taken care of by the state until they die. The lives of the citizens living in Equalitys society have no choices, their whole lives are planned by the state. The citizens aren't allowed to choose where they work, see themselves, name their children, or learn the word "I". When they have children is even planned by the state. In the society found in Anthem, you work for your men and your state, not for yourself. Your whole life is controlled by the state. "We are nothing. Mankind is all. By the grace of our brothers are we allowed our lives. We exist through, by and for our brothers who are the State. Amen."
