Ayn Rand had written a story called Anthem as her way to warn that depending on others will be our downfall, but I disagree. Her ethical egoism outlooks on life is what drives her to believe that man should be self reliant, using others makes you a “looter,” and accusing conservatives of being, “Futile, impotent, and culturally dead,” (Ayn Rand’s Long Journey to the Heart of American Politics, paragraph 7). This idea is, to me, flawed because this country and it’s developments have come from sharing ideas.
In Anthem she uses the idea of the main character, Equality 7-2521, finding and powering up a lightbulb, “...as a plot device,” (Rand Paul Gives Senate Lesson in Ayn Rand and Light Bulbs, paragraph 3) and metaphor for how if we try to share our ideas with others, they will positively be destroyed. He began eager to give his gift, “Fear nothing brothers. There is a great power in these wires, but this power is tamed. It is yours. We give it to you,” (Rand, 70), but the Council had quickly shot him down. We should use each other to raise each other up and use the support to grow, adapt, and succeed, and not see this as a crutch so that we don’t have to do anything independently. Reliance does not make humans weak, but it teaches them that sometimes we can’t do things on our own. These massive businesses and cities we utilize every day have come from owners asking the bank for a loan because they couldn’t pay the rent, and they were able to pick themselves up and repay their debts to move on. So why take away these people's opportunities? Is the number of people who benefit from being lonesome and selfish really enough to justify taking away our support of those who need a helping hand the
