The prescribed text ‘Away’ by the composer ‘Michael Gow’ is a play that showcases personal discovery. The related visual text ‘On Loan’ by ‘Geoff Bennett ‘ and Jeannie Baker’s picture book “The Hidden Forest” are also demonstrating added personal discovery.
“Away” is set in 1967-68 during the middle of the Vietnam War in Australia. It is based on three family’s lives in northern Australia: unexpected events see the families rendezvousing together to make their own personal discoveries.
One of the characters Gwen makes important discovery’s about herself. The picture book is about a boy overcoming his fears of what lies beneath the surface of the ocean, a world that he has not yet wanted to discover. On one page the visual show imaginary creatures that Ben thinks are attacking him but they are depicted as ghost-like to give the impression that they are only in Ben’s mind. Ben needs to take a risk in order to retrieve his net but his fear has held him back by the unknown waters. As the story continues Ben finds a girl, Sophie who can help him retrieve his net from the depths of the sea, but to do so she insists that Ben ventures underwater with her to discover the beauty of the hidden forest, an intriguing underwater world. When he is underwater, Ben discovers beautiful underwater sights to enjoy that change his perception of this new place. The reader finds Sophie as an instrumental person towards Ben and has changed his perception of the cold deep blue
